Tools of the Mind

Songs and Fingerplays

Dear Families,

The songs and fingerplays we learn first seem to be at the bottom of this list. Sorry that is a little awkward ... Mrs. Bridgman

We're just getting into partner hand clapping songs:
 “Miss Mary Mack”
Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack
All dressed in black, black, black
With silver buttons, buttons, buttons
All down her back, back, back
She asked her mother, mother, mother
For fifty cents, cents, cents
To see the elephants, elephants, elephants
Jump over the fence, fence, fence
They jumped so high, high, high
They touched the sky, sky, sky
And didn’t come back, back, back
Till the fourth of July, July, July

Peas Porridge Hot
Pease porridge hot, pease porridge cold,
Pease porridge in the pot, nine days old;
Some like it hot, some like it cold,
Some like it in the pot, nine days old.

A Sailor Went to Sea, Sea, Sea

A sailor went to sea, sea, sea,
To see what he could see, see, see.
But all that he could see, see, see
Was the bottom of the deep blue sea, sea, sea.
Eenie Meanie Sassaleeny,
Opps ah tumbalini,
Achi cachi Liberace, I love you,
Take a peach, take a plum,
Take a stick of bubble gum,
No peach no plumb
No stick of bubble gum
Percy, the Pale-Face Polar Bear (A million thanks to Mrs. Ricciardone for bringing us this all-time favorite)

Way up north in the ice and snow
Where the temperature drops to four below
Lives the happiest bear of all ...
Percy, the Pale-Face Polar Bear

Sleeps all day and then all night
Catches fish by the pale moonlight
Has no worries, has no cares ...
Percy, the Pale-Face Polar Bear

Then one day a hunter came
Caught poor Percy by the snout
Put him in a big tall cage ...
Percy howled and he growled, but he couldn't get out!

(Sad voice) Now he's living in a zoo ...
(Happy voice) Funny thing is he likes that, too
'Cause he met his girlfriend there ...
And she loves ...
Percy, the Pale-Face Polar Bear!
Who?
Percy, the Pale-Face Polar Bear

The Fish

In my room I have a dish

Filled with water and a fish
One day his tail gave a great big swish
And now my fish is just a wish.

Making Cookies
I am making cookie dough,
(point to self)
Round and round the beaters go.
(move hands in circles)
Add some flour from a cup,
(pretend to pour)
Stir and mix the batter up.
(pretend to stir)
Roll them, cut them, nice and neat,
(pretend to roll and cut out cookies)
Put them on a cookie sheet.
(pretend to transfer cookies)
Bake them, count them, one, two, three,
(pretend to count cookies)
Then serve them to my friends for tea.
(pretend to pass cookies around)

Here is a bunny,
With ears so funny,
And here is his hole in the ground.
At the first sound he hears,
he waggles his ears,
And hops right into the ground (click with your tongue.)

Mr. Turkey
Mr. Turkey took a walk one day in the very best of weather
Along came Mr. Duck and they both talked together.
Gobble, gobble, gobble
Quack, quack, quack.
Goodbye, goodbye
And they both walked back.

Here is a Bunny with ears so funny
And here is a hole in the ground
At the first sound he hears, he wiggles his ears and hops right into the ground. (Big cluck with your tongue)

All God's Critters Got a Place in the Choir
All God's critters got a place in the choir
Some sing low and some sing higher
Some sing out loud on the telephone wire
And some just clap their hands or paws or fins or claws or anything they got now!

Hospital themed songs and fingerplays:

(Of course we sing Miss Lucy Had a Baby, too)

Nurse and Doctor  Song
Sung to: "Row, Row, Row Your Boat"

I use a stethoscope
To listen to your heart.
To help you be a healthy child
And heal you when you're aren't.

Health Care workers

This is Dr. Bell who keeps us well. (thumb up)
This is Nurse Rick, who cares for the sick. (index up)
This is Dr. Wise, who cares for our eyes. (middle up)
This is Clerk Honey who accepts our money (ring up)
This one gee -- hey, that's me! (pinky up)
We all work in our health community!

To The Hospital
Sung to: "Are You Sleeping"

To the hospital, to the hospital,
We will go. We will go.
We will see the doctors,
We will see the nurses,
They help us, they help us.

To the hospital, to the hospital,
We will go. We will go.
We will see the babies
Sleeping in the Nursery
Mom is proud, Dad is proud.

To the X-Ray, to the X-Ray
We will go, we will go
We will have our insides checked
Make sure we are healthy
Get fixed up. Get fixed up.

To the Gift Shop, to the Gift Shop
We will go, we will go,
Maybe buy some chocolates,
A get well card or teddy bear
for a patient, for a patient.

Winter Songs

Snowflakes (to the tune of Frere Jacques)
Snowflakes, snowflakes
Snowflakes, snowflakes
All around
All around
Whirling, twirling snowflakes
Whirling, twirling snowflakes
Hit the ground
Hit the ground.

Winter Fingerplay
Winter is cold
(hug yourself and shiver)
There is snow in the sky
(flutter fingers above your head)
The squirrel gathers nuts
(pretend to gather nuts)
And the wild geese fly
(flap arms)
The fluffy red fox
(cup hands over head to form ears)
Has his fur to keep warm
(stroke arms as if stroking fur)
The bear’s in her cave
(form a cave shape with your arms)
Sleeping all through the storm
(fold hands under cheek and pretend to sleep)

Five Little Trees
The Pocket Book
David Cooper & Lynn Taylor
Five little trees, sitting on a hill,
The first one said, "I think I feel a chill!"
The second one said, "There's a man in town."
The third one said, "He's going to chop us down!"
The fourth one said, "Then we'll shine and shine!"
The fifth one said, "'Cuz it's Christmas time!"
Then, "Ahhhhh...," went the people
As on went the lights,
And the five little trees
Were all shining bright!

KWANZAA’S HERE
Tune:  “Three Blind Mice”
Red, green, black,
Red, green, black.
Kwanzaa’s here,
Kwanzaa’s here.
The decorations are quite a sight.
We light a candle every night.
The holiday is filled with light.
Kwanzaa’s here!

Thanksgiving Kid Songs

Do the Turkey Pokey
Tune: Hokey Pokey

Sing the Hokey Pokey like normal,
but then the last line goes as follows:
"You do the Turkey Pokey and you gobble all around,
that's what it's all about."

You put your right wing in.
You put your right wing out.
You put your right wing in,
And you shake it all about.
You do the turkey pokey
And you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about.

Additional verses: Left wing, Drumsticks, Stuffing, Wattle (Head), Tail Feathers (Bottom), Turkey body.

I Love the Turkey

Sung to: "This land is your land"

I love the turkey.
I love the stuffing'.
I love the gravy.
I love corn muffins.
I love my family,
We’re all together.
I'm glad Thanksgiving time is here

This is the way she wears her hat...
This is the way she stirs her brew...

This is where she has her wart...
This is how she scares you BOO...

How I wonder what you are

Fingerplays/Chants

Five Little Shells

Five little shells, down by the shore

Crash went the waves and then there were four.

Four little shells, down by the sea

Crash went the waves and then there were three.

Three little shells, shiny and new

Crash went the waves and then there were two.

Two little shells, sparkling in the sun

Crash went the waves and then there was one.

One little shell all by itself

I picked it up and I put it on my shelf.

Five Plump Peas

Five plump peas in a pea pod pressed

One grew, two grew, so did all the rest

And they grew, and they grew and they did not stop

And they grew so big that the pea pod popped!

I Had a Little Turtle

I had a little turtle

He lived inside a box

He swam in the water

He climbed up on the rocks

He snapped at a mosquito

He snapped at a flea

He snapped at a minnow

And he snapped at me!

He caught that mosquito

He caught that flea

He caught that minnow

But he didn’t catch me!

I Wash My Hands

I wash my hands, I brush my teeth

I eat good food all day

I sleep at night

When I wake up

I stretch and stretch this way.

Ten Fine Horses

Ten fine horses came to town

Five were black and five were brown

They galloped up

They galloped down

And then they galloped out of town

Click-click, click-click, click-click, click-click.

Repeat in a whisper. Then repeat silently, just mouthing the words.

Two Little Birds

Two little birds, sitting on a hill

One named Jack, the other named Jill

Fly away Jack. Fly away Jill

Come back Jack. Come back Jill.

Tow little birds, sitting on a wall

One named Peter, the other named Paul

Fly away Peter. Fly away Paul

Come back Peter. Come back Paul.

Two Little Monkeys

Two little monkeys, swinging in a tree

Teasing Mister Alligator, can’t catch me!

Along came Mister Alligator, quiet as can be

And snapped those monkeys right out of that tree!

Way Up High in the Apple Tree

Way up high in the apple tree

Two red (or green) apples looked down at me

I shook that tree as hard as I could

Down came the apple and

Mmmmm, they were good.
